Hay fever is an allergic reaction to allergens/triggers in the environment, most commonly:
Pollens – from grasses, weeds and some trees.
Dust mites – found in the home, these are tiny creatures which can’t be seen without a microscope, that feed on discarded human skin flakes and dust.
Animal dander – discarded skin flakes from pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits etc and feather dust from birds.
Moulds and fungal spores – these flourish in damp, dark and warm areas where ventilation is poor, like a bathroom, laundry or kitchen.
Air pollutants – which may be from cleaning products, scented air fresheners and the like.
