Diet and Nutrition
Most people’s symptoms are influenced by what, when and how they eat and drink. If there are foods that trigger symptoms, these foods should be avoided to reduce or stop bouts of acid reflux/heartburn.
For many people problem foods include: Coffee and caffeine containing drinks; Alcohol; Fatty, spicy, citrus, battered or fried foods; Soft drinks; Chocolate; Peppermint; Pastries, cakes and biscuits.
Changes to eating habits can help, such as eating smaller, more frequent meals and avoiding lying down after a meal – wait 2 to 3 hours after dinner before going to bed.

Other Lifestyle Changes
Stop smoking.
Reduce alcohol intake.
In a safe manner, raise the head of the bed if acid reflux symptoms occur at night. This allows gravity to help reduce the chance of stomach contents travelling up the oesophagus. Reduce bending and lifting or lying down soon after a meal.

Lose Weight
Patients who are obese or overweight, may find that even a small weight loss will reduce their symptoms.
