Proton-pump inhibitors: Pharmacy-Only

There are several brands with different active ingredients. Active ingredients:
Esomeprazole
Pantoprazole
Rabeprazole
Omeprazole
Note: Proton-pump inhibitors decrease the amount of acid made by the stomach, to give relief of symptoms of acid reflux / heartburn.
This does NOT stop food being digested in the normal way. -
The different active ingredients have different strengths and dosage regimes.

Patients with frequent (once or twice a week) episodes of heartburn or medically diagnosed GORD.

Antacids with sodium alginate

Sodium Bicarbonate
Calcium Carbonate
Sodium Alginate
Note: There is a maximum daily dose of all antacids, check on the product instructions. An overdose can adversely affect the whole body. -
The dosage will depend upon the age of the patient and can be taken after meals and before going to bed, up to 4 times a day.
Note: The Sodium Alginate forms a layer, or raft, on top of the stomach contents, thereby forming a physical barrier that helps keep the stomach contents in the stomach. -
Patients with occasional acid reflux / heartburn
Antacids
