It is not known exactly what causes eczema, but it does run in families with a history of the condition, or a history of asthma and allergies, such as hay fever.
The cause may be genetic, or how the body’s immune system reacts, as these individuals are more sensitive to certain triggers such as changes in weather, temperature and skin products including soaps.
Internal triggers of eczema:
Genetic – a family history
Certain foods, such as dairy, wheat, citrus, eggs, nuts, additives, preservatives and colourings
Stress.
External triggers of eczema:
Irritants, such as tobacco smoke, chemicals, weather (hot and humid, or cold and dry)
Allergens, such as house dust mites, moulds, grasses, pollens, pets, clothing materials, soaps, shampoos and washing powders.
