Long-term diarrhoea can be caused by:

  • An inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s Disease or ulcerative colitis

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Food intolerance, such as lactose intolerance

  • Diverticulitis

  • Malabsorption syndrome.

Certain medical treatments may cause diarrhoea, such as:

  • Some medicines, for example antibiotics

  • Taking too many laxatives

  • Radiotherapy

  • Chemotherapy
